Clowning Around ....

I hope some of you have given serious thought to your personal photographic project work that you will be shooting during 2010 and have even made a start...?
Here is my first planned project image of 2010 .... "The Happy Clown"

The story behind the image ... this project started back in September 2009. At that time my intension was to only shoot one set of images entitled "The Sad Clown".

The idea behind the "Sad Clown" was to take universally recognized expression of sadness and to play it out using a female model dressed as a white faced clown.

The white faced clown is the oldest known clown type and through the centuries have been reinvented in different ways, such as on the big screen in silent movies, these usually have an element of sadness about them in particular the Charlie Chaplin's "Hobo" character.

By intention was to bring out this feeling of unspoken sadness like in those silent movies and to engage the viewer in a way that evokes empathy of the emotion but also by using a female rather than traditional male clown gives an additional dimension of femininity.

After the completion of the first set of images I realised that there are many more human emotions that would work well using the same approach and have now therefore embarked on a larger body of work ...... with the second in the series featured here the "Happy Clown".

For this series of images I have kept the same elements present, a black background to isolate the subject, and the same studio lighting set up. The clown is a different female model for each set and each model is selected on the basis of them expressing a great wish to represent their particular emotion.

The third in the series is soon to be underway ...... discussion with the model tomorrow ...!!
